One person has died following an incident on railway tracks at the Waterloo Station in the Hutt Valley.
A witness told RNZ multiple police cars and fire trucks could be seen at Waterloo Station and that the area was blocked off.
Police want people to avoid the area.
A police spokesperson said inquiries into what happened were still ongoing and police were providing support to the person's family.
They said police remained at the scene and it would be closed to the public while they continued their work.
Hutt Valley train services are suspended between Petone and Upper Hutt.
RNZ's reporter on the scene said emergency tape was blocking the entrances to Waterloo Station and police officers were stationed there.
Metlink said buses would be replacing trains between Petone and Upper Hutt, but the Melling service was running.
Buses were also replacing trains on the Wairarapa line until further notice due to the emergency incident, Metlink said.
It said it may be difficult to find enough buses at short notice, and passengers travelling on affected services on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning should expect delays and consider alternative transport.
Updates would be posted to the Metlink website.
