Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) was an innovator in many areas of his work, as you’ll hear from Kenneth Young in this programme.
He broke away from the Italian opera tradition and began to establish a German approach. He also took control of the production side, as Ken points out:
“Weber evolved into the first truly hands on Music Director. He paid great attention to detail, casting, production and lighting. He studied costume design and even supervised the scenery painting.”
Weber also had an ear for instrumentation and pushed boundaries of playing technique.
