Henry Purcell lived in interesting times. He was born, we think, in 1659 and died in 1695.  During his brief life he lived through political and cultural upheavals, revolution, fire, plague and invasion.

Philosophers such as John Locke and scientists such as Isaac Newton were changing the ways people thought about themselves and the world. Purcell was in the middle of all this but he remains an enigmatic figure.

Purcell wrote in all the major forms of his day from opera to bawdy alehouse catches. Solo songs, choral anthems, instrumental works, large-scale choral and orchestral pieces for royal occasions: He left a large and varied body of music.
