Gayane is considered a rather mediocre ballet – ‘simply awful’ is how the APO’s programme notes describe it.
But the music is wonderful and has lasted long after the tale of young lovers from different classes set on a collective farm, with weddings, quarrels, murder and the requisite happy ending has been forgotten.
Flashy and exotic most of the music may be, but this Adagio is one of the ballet’s more contemplative moments.
