Australia's leading didgeridoo player William Barton joins the Brodsky Quartet from the UK for an exciting programme of music from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and Europe.
Included is the world premiere of a new work by New Zealand composer Salina Fisher.
The concert is presented by Chamber Music New Zealand.
William Barton first learnt the instrument from his uncle, Arthur Peterson, an elder of the Wannyi, Lardil, and Kalkadunga people. He began working with traditional dance groups and then moved into fusion and jazz rock bands before developing a career of collaborations with classical music ensembles including, over the years, the London Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic.
The Brodsky Quartet was formed in 1972 in Middlesbrough by four school kids aged about 10 ... originally they were called The Cleveland Quartet after that area of North-Eastern England. They kept playing together, changed their name after meeting the Cleveland Quartet from Ohio, and started making a mark nationally in the UK and internationally in the 1980s. Staggeringly, two of those original children: violinist Ian Belton and cellist Jacqueline Thomas are still with the quartet after 52 years and they are joined for this tour by viola player Paul Cassidy – also a long-term member, having joined in 1982 and their newest member, but long time friend, Krysia Osostowicz who’s moved into the first violinist position.
