Imagine a jumble of wooden houses on narrow curving lanes where cows, chickens and goats roam seemingly at leisure. Milkmaids and farmers; merchants and rabbis also populate the scene, and in the background rises the onion-dome of the church, and there’s maybe even a fiddler on the roof! This was the setting for Marc Chagall’s birth in 1887 in the Russian town of Vitebsk.
The song 'Dona dona' is a traditional Russian Jewish song and it comes from a recording called ‘Les Musiques de Chagall’ which presents music that may have inspired the artist throughout his life.
