After hearing Oliver Spalter play, bassonist and composer Ben Hoadley knew he wanted to write a concerto for the Auckland Youth Orchestra's Principal Bass.
The inspiration behind the work is a giant pūriri tree in a Northland forest. Ben says that pūriri are often very large and hollow, like the double bass, and imagines that if they have a voice, this is what it would be.
Ben and Oliver joined Bryan Crump to talk about the work, which will be performed by the Auckland Youth Orchestra in two concerts over the next week.
