Salina Fisher and Jerome Kavanagh are co-creators of a new work for taonga pūoro and orchestra which will have its world premiere at the Auckland Philharmonia's In the Elements concert.
Salina and Jerome talked with Three to Seven host Bryan Crump about the work. Although it's for soloist and orchestra, Salina explains why she decided not to call it a 'concerto'.
"It's called 'Papatūānuku for taonga pūoro and orchestra," she says. "And the other thing is that the roles of composer and soloist are not so defined. Jerome is very much a co-composer in this piece, because he is creating a lot of the melodies, everything that the taonga pūoro plays."
"What I've done is respond around him with the orchestra."
Jerome and Salina will also be taking part in the Classical on Cuba festival in Wellington, 2-3 September, Salina as part of the Moth Quartet while Jerome is performing with composer Michael Norris in Oro Rua Rangi ki te Whenua .
