There was an advertising slogan for the NZ tourism industry which did the rounds back in the 1980s: “Don’t leave town till you’ve seen the country”.
NZTrio is certainly doing its bit for local business.
The trio (Amalia Hall, Ashley Brown and Somi Kim) has just performed in Christchurch, Dunedin and Greytown, with a dozen more concerts around Aotearoa scheduled before the year is out.
If that’s not enough, the trio’s pianist Somi Kim took time out from ensemble work over the weekend to play Mussorgsky’s virtuosic ‘Pictures at an Exhibition' as part of Wellington’s Classical on Cuba mini-festival before rejoining the rest of NZTrio to perform cabaret music later in the day.
Somi spoke to Three to Seven host Bryan Crump about NZTrio’s 2023 Homeland tours, how she performs big works with small hands, and the joy of taking chamber music to Aotearoa's heartland.
