RNZ Concert's Bryan Crump talks with Dr Kira Omelchenko. She's a conductor from Kansas, USA, and her interest in indigenous and classical music has brought her to Aotearoa as a Fulbright Scholar.
Dr Omelchenko will be conducting the New Zealand School of Music - Te Kōkī Orchestra on Thursday 23 May at 7pm in Hunter Council Chamber in a concert which includes the world premiere of Philip Brownlee's work ' E Toru Ngā Karakia'.
She says her time in New Zealand has been more than she anticipated.
"I think coming in, when one has a Fulbright project, we have this proposal, ideas of how it might go, and the outcomes."
"I [have been] very pleasantly surprised with just all the connections I've made that weren't originally on my list."
