Georgina Palmer has come a long way since her first composition at seven.

"I hand wrote the whole thing out on manuscript paper and glued the pages together, because they were very small pages, and then I would submit that as my score for the judges.

"It's a bit embarrassing now, but quite amusing to look back on."

These days the Nelson raised composer is definitely thinking big, with plans to establish herself in the world of film music.

The New Zealand composer is currently in her third year of study at the Melbourne Conservatorium.

She spoke to Three to Seven's Bryan Crump two years after winning the Anthony Ritchie Composition Prize for young composers for her piece, 'A Grand Adventure'.

Palmer originally wrote the composition while in high school, revising it for the 2022 Anthony Ritchie competition.

The revision saw the piece keep its 10/8 meter the whole time... "because I felt that was a bit more adventurous than what I originally had".

"With the piece being called 'A Grand Adventure', I wanted to make it an exciting adventure for the listeners as well as the players, but it took a while for them to get used that time signature. It's a bit of a challenge."

Palmer was most recently named the Emerging Composer for the 2023 At The World's Edge Classical Music Festival in Queenstown and says her main influences are the Italian film composer Ennio Morricone and British composers Gerald Finzi and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Many musicians have flashpoint moments - moments when hearing or playing a particular piece really fires them creatively. For Palmer that moment was undoubtedly hearing "Gabriel's Oboe" from Morricone's score for the movie The Mission.

Her plan is to pursue post-graduate study in the United Kingdom.

"What I would really love to do, is to get into film writing and tv writing. I've always been really fascinated by soundtracks."
