Dr Te Oti Rakena (Ngāpuhi, Ngati Ruanui, Kāi Tahu) is an associate professor at the School of Music, Auckland University, teaching in the Voice Programme. He’s helped to train some of New Zealand’s finest young classical singers.

But he’s also interested how we value music from different cultures.

Dr Rakena is one of the editors of a new text book out this year, published by Routledge: Decolonising and Indigenising Music Education: First Peoples Leading Research and Practice.

He spoke with RNZ Concert's Bryan Crump about the book (a first in its field in the telling of stories that aren't usually included in music education curricula), and his own classical music education.
