The Orava String Quartet makes its New Zealand debut tonight as part of the NZ Festival.
If you google their name, the tagline for their homepage reads simply “The Orava Quartet is a classical music group of four young string players”.
Well, quite true, but they’ve also been hailed as “the most exciting young quartet on the block” – a sentiment obviously shared by their record company – their first CD has just been released by the Australian arm of the prestigious Deutche Grammophon record company.
The four players are giving just one New Zealand concert this time around, and have only just jumped off the plane.
They’re crammed into the studio to discuss their family musical heritage, their rapid rise in the classical musical world and why they wear colourful socks.
