The un-brie-lievable impact of classical music on cheese

From Upbeat, 11:30 am on 27 March 2019

It turns out it’s not just classical music lovers who are cultured by the art form; cheese is too.

Classical music makes cheese taste better, according to new research out of Switzerland.

Over the course of six months cheese makers played Mozart, Led Zeppelin and Hip-Hop tunes to nine wheels of Emmental cheese.

Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute was played through mini transmitters that directly resonated through the cheese.

This had a gouda impact, showing cheese is quite fondue of classical music.

Classical music produced a milder flavour than the cheese exposed to Led Zeppelin and Hip-Hop.

Researchers have grater plans, with the hopes of exposing cheese to several different types of Hip-Hop to see if it has similar effects.

Here at RNZ Concert we’ve chosen some classical music pieces that will make you melt.

Mozart’s The Magic Flute

The Queen of the Night aria is one of the most famous arias from the opera. Have a listen to soprano Diana Damrau’s sharp performance.

Rossini’s The William Tell Overture

We couldn’t have a story about cheese without something pastoral. Rossini’s William Tell Overture’s third movement “the call to the dairy cows” is udderly delicious.

Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue

It’s an acquired taste; but Rhapsody in Blue (cheese) is worth a try.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 1

Here’s Liberace performing classical music in a very reserved whey.
