Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (1925-2012)

He lived the 20th century in all its bleakness - a brother murdered by the Nazis, his first Winterreise performed as an American prisoner of war in Italy. His singing of the whole body of German song - from Mozart to Henze via his touchstone, Schubert - showed the world a new Germany (Ian Bostridge)

The great German baritone passed away recently at his home in Bavaria. Tonight we repeat the first of two programmes by Jon Tolansky from 2003 in which he talks with Fischer-Dieskau and reviews his career in the concert hall, recording studio and on the operatic stage (JT)
