(31) ADAMS: Nixon in China, an opera in three acts

Alice Goodman's poetic, intensely original libretto is based on Richard and Pat Nixon's historic three-day visit to China in 1972. Protagonists viewed initially as transcendent iconic figures are not so much satirised as seen for what they are.

The score pounds away eclectically with nods to Broadway and rock, Minimalism and Igor Stravinsky, but there's no mistaking the identity of the composer, who joins us, nor the colour and brilliance of one of the iconic works of our time.

40 programmes from the world's greatest classical music festival

(32) Frank Peter Zimmermann (vln), Gustav Mahler Youth Orch/Daniele Gatti

One of the great youth orchestras is back, and in distinguished company. Daniele Gatti begins with the weighty tread and unmatched radiance of music he has been exploring at Bayreuth. Frank Peter Zimmermann plays one of the 20th century's most eloquent violin concertos.

Strauss conjures up a bittersweet Vienna of young love, mid-life melancholy and abundant waltz tunes, while Ravel's apotheosis of that dance form may or may not have been intended as a metaphor for the fate of European civilisation as its unstoppable whirling reaches critical mass.

WAGNER: Parsifal, Prelude to Act 3 & Good Friday Music; BERG: Violin Concerto, To the Memory of an Angel; STRAUSS: Der Rosenkavalier, Concert Suite; RAVEL: La Valse (recorded in the Royal Albert Hall, London by BBC) (Programme 33 tomorrow at 10.00am)

40 programmes from the world's greatest classical music festival

(33) Berlin Phil/Simon Rattle

One of the world's most remarkable musical partnerships offers a programme of wide-ranging sonic adventure. Three gripping approaches to experiencing calm feature in the first half, from Ligeti's slowly shifting sound-clouds through Wagner's sustained stillness to Sibelius's most formidable and bleak evocation of a frozen landscape. The Gallic second half is all about movement and dance. Tennis is not the only game played in Debussy's flirtatious ballet for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, while Ravel's suite, drawn from an earlier commission for the same company, begins with a sunrise and ends in an orgy.

LIGETI: Atmosphères; WAGNER: Lohengrin, Prelude to Act 1; SIBELIUS: Symphony No 4 in A minor Op 63; DEBUSSY: Jeux; RAVEL: Daphnis & Chloé, Suite No 2 (recorded in the Royal Albert Hall, London by BBC) (Programme 34 Monday at 10.00am)
