RNZ (Radio New Zealand) is a statutory lifeline utility in civil defence emergencies which means we have specific duties under the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002. When an emergency happens RNZ helps with the broadcasting of crucial, sometimes life-saving, information with rolling on-air coverage and live blogging that will continue for the duration of an emergency and often beyond. Speed is of the essence in an emergency and the faster RNZ can receive information the more impact we can have in keeping communities informed.
In the event of a civil defence emergency listen to your radio
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) advises that in times of crisis or civil defence emergency a battery powered radio, or a car radio remain essential lifelines if power is out and other forms of communication are unavailable. RNZ (Radio New Zealand) is New Zealand’s statutory civil defence lifeline radio broadcaster, providing vital information and updates as they come to hand.

Independent capability in emergency kits for communication in civil defence events
RNZ has rolled out independent capability in emergency (or ICE ) kits to newsrooms around the country. Designed to be portable enough to fit in a reporter’s car these consist of a Starlink satellite dish, a portable solar generator (battery) and a portable solar panel and allow for a reporter to be completely self-sufficient in an emergency for at least 24 hours when normal power and communications are unavailable.
