Fiji call for suspension of Human Rights Commission Director

1:20 pm on 28 December 2006

The director of the Pacific Centre for Public Integrity, or PCPI, Angie Heffernan, has called for the suspension of the Human Rights Director, Shaista Shameem.

She says this follows some comments made by the Director in particular in relation to the detention and alleged abuse of six pro-democracy advocates at the hands of the military on Christmas Eve.

Ms Heffernan says Dr Shameem's comments are out of order.

"She's also basically questioned the motives of people that are taken in, saying and this has been reported, that some of them have different motives and they're out their to push their own agenda. Now this is an extremely wrong thing for her to say, particularly given her position."
