Fiji military top figures touted for diplomacy

The military in Fiji could be facing a number of changes at senior level if career soldiers are chosen for diplomatic posts.

Already, the Deputy Military Commander, Captain Esala Teleni of the Fiji Navy, has been appointed as the new police commissioner.

Preliminary discussions have been held with other senior figures, including the Land Force commander, Colonel Pita Driti, who confirms he has been approached in connection with the position of High Commissioner to Malaysia.

But the spokesman for the military, Major Neumi Leweni, says it won't be a major shake-up:

"The commander is still there and the people that have worked with these people who are leaving for quite a few years are the possible ones that will be replacing them so nothing much will really change."
