The Marshall Islands to hold police training academy

12:00 pm on 29 January 2009

The standard of policing in the Marshall Islands is set to improve when a police training academy is held in Majuro later this year.

The academy is supported by the Australian Federal Government's Pacific Police Development Programme.

Our correspondent Giff Johnson says the academy is a huge step forwards given the lack of training police officers have.

"People get hired basically from high school or maybe college, they get hired for the job 'so then, you're a policeman and here's ten days of on the job training'; so there are a lot of deficiencies in police activity here for just lack of knowledge."

The aim is to hold the police training academy in June.
