Drollet becomes new French Polynesia assembly president

9:39 am on 15 April 2011

French Polynesia's assembly has elected the veteran pro-independence politician, Jacqui Drollet, as its new president.

Mr Drollet won 29 votes in the first round of voting, the minimum number needed to secure the position.

He defeated three other candidates, including Gaston Flosse, who announced their candidacy as this morning's sitting opened.

Only 47 members took part in the vote after the To Tatou Aia Party of Gaston Tong Sang decided to abstain as did the Fetia Api.

Mr Drollet replaces Oscar Temaru who became the new president at the beginning of this month.
