Call for Fiji scholarship to be re-instated

12:30 pm on 3 June 2014

An aspiring candidate in Fiji's elections, Roshika Deo, is calling for the reinstatement of the university scholarship of one of her workers.

The University of the South Pacific student, Tamani Seruiraduvatu, received a termination letter from the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board last week.

It says Mr Seruiraduvatu had been associating himself in political agendas, which amounted to personal negligence and misconduct.

Ms Deo says the board has not only taken away his right to education, but also his right to exercise political freedom.

She says it sends a clear message to other students not to participate in politics, which is a threat to democracy.

"It's utterly ridiculous what has happened, and the fact the TSLB has not reinstated his scholarship. They're not exercising objectivity and independence, and they're being used by the current administration."

Roshika Deo says she has filed a complaint to the Elections Commission but has not received a formal response.
