According to the prosecution case, Hang Song Lin gave one thousand US dollars and asked that the public servant help him out as a friend, as his businesses were assessed as owing thousands of dollars in tax.

The employee told Mr Hang that he could not accept the money, but Mr Hang left the office without taking the cash.

Mr Hang has posted bail of 15,000 US dollars and is due back in court on Friday for a preliminary examination hearing.
