A chief of a village in American Samoa where French sailors were killed more than 200 years ago has sent a message of condolence to French President over the terrorist attacks in Paris.

On December 11th, 1787 members of French explorer Jean-Francois La Perouse's team who were trying to fetch water from a stream in Aasu village were killed by villagers.

A monument at the spot where the battle took place was erected by the French government in 1883.

Aasu's paramount chief, Lualemaga Faoa, says in his message of condolence, the people of his village and American Samoa are extremely saddened to learn of such an uncivilised act toward the peaceful and loving people of France.

Lualemaga also says the 12 French sailors who died and are buried in Aasu are, as he put it, well preserved and a part of their village all these 228 years.
