Matson Shipping is entering the American Samoa market giving the territory its first direct shipping link with Hawaii.

It is to start in August.

The shipping company, which has been in business for 134 years, launched its service at a function in Pago Pago on Saturday.

Former All Black star, Laauli Michael Jones, who works for Matson in Auckland, was among those attending.

The Matson service will link Honolulu, Apia, Pago Pago, Tonga, and Fiji before returning to Honolulu.
