Papua New Guinea's two most recent former prime ministers have issued a call for the current prime minister, Peter O'Neill, to step down.

Sir Michael Somare and Sir Mekere Morauta said the country is heading down an uncertain, slippery road, led by a man behaving increasingly like a dictator, showing total disregard for the law.
Both former leaders said they are asking their fellow Papua New Guineans to join them in rescuing the country.
They said they cannot, through inaction, see PNG's democracy and its institutions ruined.

They said Mr O'Neill has brought the nation to its knees - socially, economically and politically - and he cannot be allowed to do more damage.
The former prime ministers said Mr O'Neill has tricked the public into thinking PNG is sailing along smoothly, but call that a deceitful display of moral corruption.
They said the only way to end the chaos and division is for Mr O'Neill to recall Parliament immediately, resigning, and allow the election of a new prime minister.
