Fiji PM told to seek PR advice on use of Twitter

A former Fiji Times editor says the country's Prime Minister should seek public relations guidance when using his personal twitter account.

Netani Rika says Frank Bainimarama reacted petulantly to a eulogy for the late former vice president, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, responding on his personal twitter handle.

Graham Leung had been forthright, saying those who deposed Ratu Joni as vice president in 2006 were now ironically 'lionising' him.

Mr Bainimarama, who led the 2006 coup, tweeted "Was an opportunity to reconcile but some people lost it", as well as two other tweets in response.

Mr Rika said Mr Bainimarama was visibly annoyed during the eulogy and his use of Twitter is not a good look.

"He sat in the pew staring at Graham, even glaring at him. He probably needs some help in his public relations department. These days, whatever you say in Fiji can be around the world before you put your device down. So somebody obviously needs to manage the situation better."
