The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is calling on civil society leaders to ensure the region's powers adhere to deals they have made on self-determination.
Dame Meg Taylor was responding to questions on the role of the Forum in the lead up to the planned 2018 referendum on self-determination in New Caledonia and a vote on possible independence set for mid-2019 in Bougainville.
While Bougainville is part of Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia is a new Forum member, Dame Meg said the agency would not have a role in any vote.
Pacnews reports Dame Meg as saying she will visit Bougainville next year.
Dame Meg also urged civil society groups to advocate and create awareness on the people's rights and responsibilities on self-determination.
