A criminal court in French Polynesia has jailed a 62-year-old man for three years for making death threats and trying to run over his wife.

The man has been described as the head of the police of the self-styled Pakamotu republic which had been defying the French state.
Reports said security for the trial was tighter than usual because of the presence of Pakamotu supporters.
The man had repeatedly assaulted her and in one incident tried to run her over as she was getting off a bus.
He has had several earlier convictions.
