The Samoa Observer reported that the officers left on Saturday for a 12-month deployment to the African country.

A civil war has been raging for several years in South Sudan between the country's military forces and the Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement.

According to the UN, its peacekeeping force in South Sudan numbers around 12,000 in total.

Samoa's police commissioner Fuiavailili Egon Keil congratulated the officers who left for Sudan for making it through a tough selection process.

He reminded them their roles as ambassadors of Samoa in the UN arena during their deployment.
