Papua New Guinea's Minister for Bougainville Affairs, Father Simon Dumarinu, has lost his seat in the national parliament.

Father Simon's 2017 general election victory in the Central Bougainville electorate was the subject of a successful electoral petition.

A national court judge ordered a recount of the vote, which has resulted in Sam Akoitai being declared the new member-elect.

Mr Akoitai, who is a former PNG Mining Minister, had won the recount by only four votes - 7,257 to Father Simon's 7,253.

The last time Mr Akoitai was in parliament was back in 2007.
