Striking senior public sector workers in Wallis and Futuna have held talks with the French prefect who has just returned from France.
Local media reported the meeting lasted half an hour but the stoppage, which began at the start of last week, is continuing.
Earlier, the strikers said they wanted a mediator and ruled out discussing their grievances with the prefect Jean-Francis Treffel.
The strike was launched by about 30 top administrators who want to have their competencies recognised and be reclassified as French public servants.
A week ago, they added roadblocks at the main administration complex, with the strike extending to the postal service.
