Samoa's government says it's ready to implement a ban of single use plastic at the end of January.
The ban will prohibit the import, manufacture, export, sale and distribution of plastic shopping bags, packaging and straws.
Packaging for frozen goods and some food items such as meat will be expempted.
The Environment Ministry said retailers who do not comply will face a US$4,000 fine.
