The Fiji Met Service says there is no longer a threat of a cyclone developing near Rotuma.

A tropical depression northwest of Rotuma, which had been forecast to become a cyclone later today, is weakening.

But the weather office said damaging gale force winds gusting up to 90 kilometres an hour are still expected to affect Rotuma over the next 12 to 36 hours.

And it said mariners in Rotuma waters need to be ready for gusts of up to 50 knots and high seas.
