Local government elections in Papua New Guinea have reportedly been extended by a week to allow for the completion of voting and counting in remote areas.

The secretary of the provincial affairs department, Dickson Guina, told the newspaper, The National, that the writs for the elections were supposed to have been returned by last Friday.

But he said some rural wards were yet to even begin voting.

He said the electoral commission asked for a week's extension, which has been granted.
