Work has begun on the construction of Nauru's first international cargo terminal at the Aiwo Boat Harbour area.
With support of the Asian Development Bank, the work would improve the country's maritime trade and connectivity, the government said in a statement.
On Tuesday, Nauru President Lionel Aingimea visited the site as engineers installed large reinforced concrete piles into the atoll's bedrock.
Over 500 of the concrete piles would form the basis of the port's main structure.
Mr Aingimea said Nauru was now realising its dream of having an international port.
The ADB said the efficient, reliable, and climate-resilient port would be a lifeline to the people of Nauru.
