This figure is in addition to the 51 cases diagnosed among a French mobile police squad that had just returned from Tahiti.

Most cases are the result of local transmission, exacerbated by a party in a Papeete restaurant two weeks ago.

There had been calls this week to reintroduce mandatory quarantine requirement for international arrivals but both the government and the French High Commission ruled out such measures.

The requirement was dropped a month ago to boost tourism.

Instead the authorities insist on travellers being coronavirus negative on departure for Tahiti and to self-test for the virus on the fourth day of their stay.

Anyone going on a cruise ship also has to take a Covid-19 test.

The first case in the second wave was discovered when a newly arrived American tourist self-tested on a ship bound for Rangiroa.

It returned to port in Papeete where the other 339 passengers and crew all tested negative for Covid-19.

In the first wave, which triggered a lockdown and border closure, 62 people contracted Covid-19.

There has been no fatality to date.
