The French prime minister Jean Castex announced a curfew from 9pm to 6am from Friday for a six-week period for 54 French departments and for French Polynesia.

Castex warned that the coming weeks would be difficult and the number of deaths related to Covid-19 would increase.

France has logged nearly one million cases and more than 34,000 deaths.

In French Polynesia, the Covid-19 pandemic has claimed 19 lives as more than 5000 cases have now been recorded, most of them in the past month.

In May, a curfew in French Polynesia was lifted after the administrative court in Papeete ruled it was illegal.

It had been introduced by the French High Commissioner and the French Polynesian president after lockdown provisions had been flouted.
