Group claims blockade hitting New Caledonia fuel depots

A campaign group says trucks are unable to leave two fuel depots in New Caledonia due to its blockade protesting against the high cost of living.

The group, the Citizens Association of New Caledonia, set up the blockades at Numbo and Ducos in the Noumea area this morning.

With the latest action, the group wants to force a meeting with the fuel companies and the government this week.

Its banners also called for taxing the economically dominant nickel sector.

Earlier this month, the Association's representatives quit negotiations with the government after failing to persuade it to lower fuel prices.

Last week, the group held off with protests, saying its members wanted to organise more effective and better-coordinated action.

The Association, which was formed last year and describes itself as apolitical, said it is campaigning alongside others, like farmers, truckers, and unions, to lower the cost of living.

The Association said it is not acceptable that the general population must pay up, but instead it is the multinationals that need to act because they triggered this inflation.
