Pacific Games - baton

The 2023 Pacific Games baton is now on its way around the Solomon Islands.

This follows its unveiling in Honiara last Saturday by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.

The Games baton launch also marked the 100-day countdown to the Games' opening ceremony on November 19.

The baton, designed as a paddle, is now being taken to all the provinces in the Solomons.

Beach volleyball - Continental Cup

The Vanuatu and Solomons beach volleyball teams are preparing together for the upcoming Continental Cup in Vanuatu.

Vanuatu has sent its team to Honiara to train at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sports along with their counterparts from the Solomons.

The teams will play warm-up matches against each other before leaving for Port Vila at the end of the month.

The Continental Cup will be held from September 1-5 and will be a qualifier for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Football - Solomon Islands

World football boss Gianni Infantino is due to visit Solomon Islands on Monday as he makes his way across the Pacific during the Women's World Cup.

As part of his visit to Honiara, a match will take place between the FIFA President's XI and the local football federation President XI's at the Lawson Tama stadium.

On Sunday Infantino visited Port Moresby where he opened the new headquarters of the Papua New Guinea Football Association and met Prime Minister James Marape.

Football - New Caledonia

New Caledonia's young footballers gained an encouraging 1-1 draw against New Zealand last week as the two teams prepare for the FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year.

In the second match of the series, also played in Auckland, the Kiwi side won 3-0.

Both sides have qualified for the youth world cup which takes place in Indonesia from November 10 to December 2.

Paddling - Samoa

The 2023 International Va'a Federation (IVF) World Paddling Distance Championships are being held in Apia, Samoa this week.

It was officially opened last Saturday with the Prime Minister of Samoa, Fiamē Naomi Mata'afa, welcoming participants from 27 visiting countries.

Competition starts on Monday with the final rounds on Friday.

Sailing - Samoa

Two Samoan sailors will be competing at the Sailing World Championships in the Netherlands this week.

Eroni Leilua and Vaimo'oi'a Ripley will be sailing for Samoa.

The event is a 2024 Olympic Games qualifier and the sailors will be up against participants from across the globe.
