The case of Manu Samoa head coach being charged with multiple sexual offences has stunned the island nation, a spokesperson for the Samoa Prime Minister's Office, who wished to remain anonymous, says.

"It's like wow, what a shocker," the spokesperson told RNZ Pacific on Monday.

Mase Mahonri Schwalger has been charged with multiple serious offences, including unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault, and common assault.

The former national rugby team captain, who played professional rugby in New Zealand, was appointed as head coach of the Manu Samoa in late March.

Police have confirmed there are two complaints against Mase - both complainants are related to him.

Mase was charged last Thursday and released on bail.

He will appear in court on 4 November.

RNZ Pacific correspondent in Apia, Tipi Autagavaiaia, said social media in the country has been "silent" on the matter.

"This is an indication that the country is in shock," he said.

RNZ Pacific has reached out to the police, the rugby union and the Supreme Court for comment without success.

Meanwhile, Lakapi Samoa are remaining silent on the coach's employment status.
