Thousands of people in Fiji's central division are facing water disruptions for the next three days due to planned "essential connection works".

The water cuts began on midnight Thursday and will end on Sunday, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) said.

The utility company said it is carrying out works to connect the Viria Water Supply - which delivers water to around 360,000 Fijians living in the Suva-Nausori corridor - to the Waila Water Treatment Plant.

The disruption to water supply, which affects the parliamentary complex in the capital, has also resulted in the parliament session for Friday to be cancelled.

The parliament office said in an advisory that "the necessary preparatory works for the water disruption will not be enough to ensure full hygience standards for the parliamentary complex" which is "an OHS (occupational health and safety) matter".

It said that "any inconvenience caused is sincerely regretted".

Affected schools, however, are open.

The Education Ministry said it had been working proactively all week to ensure that schools were prepared for this situation.

"The Ministry has ensured that water tanks are filled and additional resources are ready. The WAF has assured the Ministry officials that they will be on standby as necessary," it said.

WAF chief operating officer Seru Soderberg said there were a lot of questions about streamlining the company's processes.

"We have streamlined our works and planned it to be as quick and efficient as possible. And also weather dependent, that is also going to play a part in the progress of works," he told local media on Tuesday.
