Funding boost for Pacific maritime safety

Maritime New Zealand has recently committed over US$6.3 million over three years to improve safety at sea in the Pacific region.

The programme, was set up in 2012,  following a number of significant maritime accidents including the sinking of passenger ferries in Tonga and Kiribati, with tragic consequences.

The head of the Pacific Maritime Safety Programme, David Billington, spoke to Jenny Meyer about what's being done to keep people safe at sea.

A joint-agency programme aimed at improving maritime safety in the Pacific provided a purpose-built response boat for the Kiribati Police Maritime Unit
