Pacific should challenge Nauru govt's 'shameful behaviour'

A law professor says the Nauru government has behaved shamefully over the Nauru 19 case and the Pacific must speak out about it.

Last week, the newly set up Court of Appeal on Nauru overturned a decision to permanently stay the case made earlier by the Australian judge Geoff Muecke.

The case involves 19 people who were charged after protests outside the country's parliament four years ago

They were charged with a number of offences including unlawful assembly and disturbing the legislature following the protests triggered by the suspension of almost all the opposition MPs and the government's interference in the judiciary.

Macquarie University adjunct professor George Newhouse told Don Wiseman the permanent stay will have to be reheard.
