Ninety seven percent of votes cast in the Bougainville referendum have backed independence.
The result of the poll in the autonomous Papua New Guinea region was announced earlier in Buka by the Bougainville Referendum Commission.
Voting took place over two weeks, with people asked to choose between independence or greater autonomy within PNG.
