The national congress of New Caledonia's pro-independence platform, the FLNKS, has been postponed due to major differences between its hard-line component and its more moderate parties.

A large group of CCAT militants turned up to the event at the weekend and were kept waiting in their vehicles on the road, with the hope of being allowed to take part in the FLNKS congress.

New Caledonia government spokesperson Charles Wea says they were not allowed in due to security concerns and the whole meeting was called off.

French Pacific desk correspondent Patrick Decloitre spoke with Pacific Waves host Susana Suisuiki to explain the differences.
