Samoa traditions risk abuse in criminal cases

Samoa's Supreme Court has issued a warning for those who abuse custom and tradition, especially the ifoga - a traditional Samoan apology to get reduced jail time.

The Samoa Observer reports Judge Justice Vui Clarence Nelson told the man the ifoga he did was an attempt to lessen the court's punishment and was not acceptable. 

The University of Auckland's Teaching Fellow, Beatrice Tabangcora spoke with Pacific Waves host who explains the significance of the ifoga and the role of Samoa's customs in its legal system.
