The Tonga government is being urged to prioritise educating people in the kingdom about the importance of recycling.

According to the Tonga Recyclers Association there is an accumulation of over 30,000 scrap vehicles or end of life vehicles on the main island of Tongatapu.

The association's president Saimone Vuki says this number continues to climb with more and more cars being imported every year which has negative consequences for the environment.

Mr Vuki says the government in Tonga needs to make all forms of recycling a priority. He says the association's goal is to educate and change people's mindsets to prioritize recycling for the benefit of the environment.

Saimone Vuki spoke with RNZ Pacific's Grace Fiavaai who began by asking him how he got into scrap metal recycling.
