The Vatican on December 12, 2023 approved blessings for same-sex couples but insisted they must not be established as a Catholic rite nor given in contexts related to civil unions or weddings. In a document approved by Pope Francis, the Vatican backed "the possibility of blessings for couples in irregular situations and for couples of the same sex" but "this blessing should never be imparted in concurrence with the ceremonies of a civil union, and not even in connection with them". Papua New Guinea is preparing to roll out the red carpet for the Pope's arrival on Friday night.

As part of an 11-day, multi-country papal trip, the Pope will visit the PNG capital Port Moresby and Vanimo from September 6th to 9th.

About 30 percent or 30 million people in PNG are Catholic.

Already, more than 37 thousand people have registered to attend Mass and there's a major focus on giving unemployed youth hope.

Chairman of the Organising committee, Bishop Rozario Menezes, told RNZ Pacific's Eleisha Foon, the Pope is expected to meet PNG's Prime Minister James Marape, thousands of street children, Bishops and Priests as well as Pacific leaders.
