Radio New Zealand launches new Android App
Released at 2:32 pm on 25 October 2012
Many more New Zealanders will be able to access Radio New Zealand content through their smartphones following the release this week of a new application specifically designed for Android phones.
The launch of the new Android App follows the successful release last year of the Radio New Zealand iPhone App which has already been downloaded more than 50,000 times.
Radio New Zealand’s iPhone App can be used on a range of Apple products including the iPhone, iPod and iPad. The new Android App can also be downloaded on both smartphones and Android-based tablet computers.
Radio New Zealand Chief Executive and Editor-in-Chief Peter Cavanagh said he expected a rapid take up of the new Android App:
“The latest figures released by IDC Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker* show that more than 68% of the smartphones sold around the world so far this year are using Android technology.
“Our new Android App will exponentially increase the number of people able to access Radio New Zealand content on-demand while they’re on the move, both here and overseas.
“In the first few days since its release, the Radio New Zealand App is already receiving 5-Star reviews on the Android App Store.”
Smartphone applications have revolutionised access options for audiences tuning in to programming from New Zealand’s only public service broadcaster.
The Apps provide access to live-streaming on all Radio New Zealand radio services including Radio New Zealand National, Radio New Zealand Concert, Radio New Zealand International and Parliamentary broadcasts when the house is in session.
An extensive range of programming is available on demand, listeners can browse featured content and create their own playlists and the latest Radio New Zealand news bulletin is available at the touch of a button.
